Are you looking for a break from busy city life to recharge and just do as little as possible, or amore adventurous experience exploring the delightful Tulbagh countryside? Either way, Essere Lodge is the place to be. Nestled off the beaten track, against a stunningly breathtaking backdrop of mountains and valleys, is the rustic,‘country-chic’ boutique guesthouse, retreat and function venue to which I was invited, along with other online media influencers and bloggers. It was a fantastic opportunity to explore what the charming town of Tulbagh has to offer!
Alison, who owns EssereLodge together with her husband, showed me the way to what I called “my piece of heaven”. My suite was everything I wanted and more, with beautiful, crisp, white linen, and a soft, flowing mosquito net that hung from the wall over the bed. I loved the fact that enough natural light could enter the suite, which had its very own private garden, with patios opening up to lovely, tranquil views.

Things to do in Tulbagh
Cheese-making and demo tasting at Essere Lodge: Making cheese is a very interesting process. Adding certain ingredients to transform milk into a soluble form within minutes is mind blowing. Annie Christensen, founder of Bellecrème artisan cheese in Tulbagh, was really hands-on in showing us the cheese-making process. Annie has extensive knowledge in microbiology, and produces the best cheese all year round. Making Mozzarella has never been so much fun. We each had a turn, and oh boy, did that cheese taste good!
Wine-tasting at the historic Twee Jonge Gezellen Estate: We spent a perfect afternoon with awesome people at a gorgeous, historic wine farm (which was founded in 1710 and has been in the same family ever since), tasting the very best wines Twee Jonge Gezellen has to offer. The farm boasts panoramic views of mountains, blue skies, and acres of vineyard, far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We tasted their famous, bottle-fermented Krone MCC (Méthode Cap Classique) sparkling wine, as well as a number of classic vintage wines made from grapes harvested at night.
My stay at Essere Lodge – and exploring Tulbagh itself – was nothing short of amazing. The friendly owners provide you with information about Tulbagh and what to do in the town and surrounds, and the staff are amazing. They cater for your every need and offer excellent, personalised service. Essere Lodge is equipped for wedding functions, business meetings, private parties, romantic getaways, and so muchmore.
